Glossary
- Annex I countries : There are 41 Annex I countries including the members of the European Union. These countries are classified as industrialized countries and countries in transition: Australia, Belarus, Canada, European Union, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, Russian Federation, Switzerland, Turkey, Ukraine, USA
- CCS (Carbone Capture and Storage): CCS is a technology to prevent large quantities of carbon dioxide or CO2 (a greenhouse gas) from being released into the atmosphere from the use of fossil fuel in power generation and other industries. The technology involves: collecting or capturing the CO2 produced at large industrial plants using fossil fuel (coal, oil and gas), transportation to a suitable storage site; and finally pumping it deep underground to be securely and permanently stored away from the atmosphere in rock. (Global CCS Institute)
- CDM (Clean Development Mechanism): a mechanism under the Kyoto Protocol, the purpose of which, in accordance with Article 12 of the Kyoto Protocol, is to assist Parties not included in Annex I in achieving sustainable development and in contributing to the ultimate objective of the Convention, and to assist Parties included in Annex I in achieving compliance with their quantified emission limitation and reduction commitments under Article 3 of the Kyoto Protocol. (CDM glossary definition)
- CER (certified emission reduction) : a unit issued for emission reductions from CDM project activities or PoAs (non-A/R) in accordance with the CDM rules and requirements, which is equal to one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent, calculated using global warming potentials defined by decision 2/CP.3 or as subsequently revised in accordance with Article 5 of the Kyoto Protocol
- COP: Conference Of the Parties (of the KP) [yearly]. COP15= Copenhagen, COP16=Cancun, COP17=Durban
- GHG (greenhouse gas): a greenhouse gas listed in Annex A to the Kyoto Protocol, unless otherwise specified in a particular methodology (CDM glossary definition)
- Kyoto Protocol: the protocol to the Convention adopted in Kyoto, Japan, on 11 December 1997, which entered into force on 16 February 2005. The Kyoto Protocol, among other things, sets binding targets for the reduction of GHG emissions by Annex I Parties. (CDM glossary definition
- Liability: legal responsibility arising from the CCS project activity or the relevant geological storage site, with the exception of the obligations arising from a net reversal of storage as set out but including all obligations related to the operation of the storage site (e.g. monitoring, remedial measures), to compensate for or remedy any significant damages, including damage to the environment, such as ecosystem damage, other material damages or personal injury.
- Non-Annex I countries: There are 94 Non-Annex I countries. These countries are classified as developing economies. Some of the members are : Brazil, Indonesia, Chad or Colombia.
- SBSTA: The Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) meets at least twice a year to provide advice to the Conference of the Parties (COP) on matters of science, technology and methodology, including guidelines for improving standards of national communications and emission inventories. Its role is set out in the Article 9 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)( cf definition at: http://cdmrulebook.org/74 ).
- UNFCCC: is an international environmental treaty produced at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), informally known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to 14, 1992. The objective of the treaty is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. The UNFCCC is also the name of the United Nations Secretariat charged with supporting the operation of the Convention. The Secretariat, augmented through the parallel efforts of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), aims to gain consensus through meetings and the discussion of various strategies. As of May 17, 2010 the Secretariat is Christiana Figueres from Costa Rica.
