Greenpeace

Type of actor: NGO

Who are they ?

Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organization that acts to change attitudes and behavior, to protect and conserve the environment. Greenpeace is present in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Pacific. To maintain its independence, Greenpeace does not accept donations from governments or corporations but relies on contributions from individual supporters and foundation grants.

What is their position ?

CCS is not proven to be a safe and sound technology yet. It is prohibitively expensive and uneconomic.

It does not comply with the objectives stated by the CDM as it will not deliver real  CO2 emissions reduction. Therefore, it will not effectively contribute to the sustainable development of the host country. Moreover, the cost of CCS technology will prevent an equitable distribution of CDM projects.

Finally, the CDM is the worst possible mechanism for CCS policy development: CCS projects are developed on a much longer term than the duration of CDM credits.
