IEA

Type of actor: organisation

Who are they ?

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is an autonomous organisation which works to ensure reliable, affordable and clean energy for its 28 member countries and beyond. It is at the heart of global dialogue on energy, providing authoritative and unbiased research, statistics, analysis and recommendations.

Today, the IEA’s four main areas of focus are energy security, economic development, environmental awareness, and engagement worldwide.

What is their position ?

CCS is a crucial part of worldwide efforts to limit global warming by reducing CO2 emissions. The broad deployment of low-carbon energy technologies could reduce projected 2050 emissions to half 2005 levels – and that CCS could contribute about one-fifth of those reductions in a list of least-cost technology portfolio. This would require the implementation of 100 CCS projects by 2020 and 3000 by 2050.

The IEA urges countries to come to a final agreement because the CDM is the only large scale CO2 market-based founding mechanism operating in developing economies.

CCS capacity needs to be ensured within or in support of relevant CDM bodies. Ex: creation of a CCS working group or defining CCS as a new CDM “sector-scope”.

Specific modalities and procedures should only be developed to the extent necessary Research has already been done on that and  it should be up to local authorities to develop these.
