Type of actor: country
What is their position?
The United Arab Emirate, which has one of the highest carbon footprints per capita in the world, highly supports the inclusion of CCS into the CDM.
They see it as an indispensible component of a broader strategy to tackle the challenge of climate change. The UAE however understands that CCS projects still face considerable barriers, particularly in terms of cost. Therefore, the CDM would provide a framework to address cost-related issues and paving the way to transfer important technologies to developing countries. In general, the UAE believes that the CDM will help in developing the CCS technology further and taking a step towards set regulations in terms of risk assessment, site selection, technical uncertainties, modalities and liability.
