1892- 1916 Tuvalu (then called Ellice islands) is administered as a protectorate of the British Empire.
1916-1974 The Gilbert and Ellice islands are reunited to become a British colony.
1942 World War II: the Americans use the main island of Tuvalu, Funafuti as their headquarters. In order to build two airstrips they use dirt from the island leaving behind gaping holes (borrow pits).
1974 Tuvaluans vote for their independence. Separation from the Gilbert islands (now Kiribati).
Oct 1st, 1978 Independence of Tuvalu, which remains within the Commonwealth.
2000 The United Nations welcomes Tuvalu as their 189th member.
2001 Tuvalu obtains a voice in the United Nation.
2005 Creation of Alofa Tuvalu
2009 United Nation Climate Change Conference (also known as the Copenhagen summit). Tuvalu attracted a lot of media attention by proposing the “Tuvalu Protocol” to impose deeper emission cuts.
