The model created by the California Air Board Resources (CARB) shows the highest level of greenhouse gases produced by sugarcane bioethanol. It assess the level of greenhouse gases released in the bioethanol process at 69 g/MJ. This model was created in 2011 on the behest of Governor Jerry Brown for the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard. Consequently, environmental protection organisations and “green” groups favour this model since they believe it accurately shows the damage that the exchange of agricultural land to sugar-cane fields for bioethanol production causes. They suggest that the IFPRI model is designed to favour business to the detriment of the environment.
